I peer out into the heat and daylight, and wander west towards the Old Courthouse. This is similar to, and smaller than, the Capitol in Washington DC: a central dome above columns and pediments. Once the tallest building in St Louis, it is now like a jewel in a bucket of concrete turds. I know that it is beautiful inside, with murals and columned galleries lining the dome, but it is a museum and I have had enough museums.

To my left, two blocks away, I can see Busch Stadium – a lump on the cityscape made of red brick. Commonly known as Busch III, it is home to the St Louis Cardinals National League Baseball Team. Like its two predecessors, Busch III is named to promote Budweiser beer, which was first brewed in St Louis in 1876 by Adolphus Busch – and is still brewed by Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association. The stadium is called Busch, rather than Budweiser or Bud, because stadiums cannot be named after alcoholic drinks. In his book American Heartbeat, the English writer Mick Brown describes the decision to build a sports stadium so close to the Old Courthouse as ‘an act of planning similar to relocating Wembley Stadium beside Westminster Abbey’.
